Meet our Principal

Dr. Elaine M. Mendez has dedicated 18 years to education. Her career began in the classroom, where she passionately supported her students' language development and academic growth. After spending several years teaching in different elementary grade levels, she transitioned out of the classroom and into the role of Teacher Coach. As a teacher coach, Dr. Mendez provided invaluable guidance to her colleagues, helping them refine their instructional practices and improve student outcomes. Her leadership skills led to her appointments as Vice Principal and later Director of Preschool Education, where she implemented innovative programs and fostered a positive school culture centered on student success and teacher development. 
Dr. Mendez obtained the degree of Doctor of Education focusing on Curriculum & Instruction/Elementary Education (Ed. D). She also holds a Master’s in Educational Leadership (MEDL) and a Master’s in Teaching. (MAT) An accomplished author, Dr. Mendez writes on topics related to early childhood, multilingual education, teacher coaching and development. She actively contributes to the field through presentations and educational chats focused on teaching, leading, and learning, sharing her expertise with fellow educators.
Dr. Mendez is genuinely excited about joining the Garfield Public Schools family. Her eagerness to work alongside teachers, staff, students, families, and the community is a testament to her commitment to the trajectory of hard work, collaboration, and student success.
Dr. Mendez is married and has three children. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, reading, and supporting her daughters’ small business venture.
